Indigo paced around the lounge and the kitchen waiting for River to come back. Tonight had been wonderful, laughing and talking with River and Tierra and there was a huge part of her that wanted this life with him, that could easily picture herself here. But was it fair to get involved with him when he had no idea what he was letting himself in for? She’d wanted an opportunity to see if they still had that connection and it was very clear they did. She’d wanted a chance to get to know him to see if they had something more, but the more time they spent together, the deeper the feelings she had for him and she got the impression he felt the same. And just as he was thinking about how she could fit into his life with Tierra, she was going to throw a baby into that equation, too. He had to move forward with all the facts. He had to decide whether he wanted a relationship with her, knowing she was pregnant. She’d been going about this all wrong. It was deceitful and unfair to let him fall for her without him knowing the whole truth.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps approaching the door. It was time to face the music.

River opened the door and he smiled at her.

‘Why don’t you grab your stuff and I’ll take you over to your new treehouse?’ he said.

‘Oh, I thought we were going to talk.’

‘We are, but I want to show you the treehouse first while it’s still relatively light outside.’

‘Oh, sure, OK.’

She went upstairs and gathered everything into a bag. She was a bit thrown by this. She would have thought talking to each other was the most important thing now. Of course she was grateful that she had somewhere to stay for the next few months and she was obviously curious to see it but was now really the right time?

She went back downstairs and he was waiting for her near the door.

‘Before we go, I thought I should give you this.’ He handed her a pencil and she couldn’t help the huge smile spreading across her face. ‘It seemed appropriate.’

‘Thank you, I shall treasure it.’ She tucked it into her bag.

They walked down the steps into the wood. The sun was just starting to set, painting the trees and leaves with a rose gold glow.

‘How are the new treehouses going?’ Indigo asked.

‘We’re a little behind right now,’ River said. ‘We’ve already started taking bookings for the summer holiday for some of them so they have to be finished by then, all of it does: the lights, the paths, everything. We’ll probably end up getting some local help to get things finished off. I’m not too worried about it at the moment as we have three months but we’re not as far along as I’d like to be.’

‘Can I help?’ Indigo asked, although she wasn’t sure what she could do.

‘Depends, what are your carpentry skills like?’

‘Not great.’

‘Then probably not but I loved what you did with the painted flowers this afternoon.
